A powerful earthquake has hit Christchurch for the second time in less
than six months, causing scores of deaths and widespread destruction.

Sixty-five people are known to have died in the 6.3-magnitude quake on
Tuesday and that number is expected to climb. A state of emergency has
been declared and is expected to last at least five days.

Prime Minister John Key says it could be New Zealand's darkest day.

The quake struck at 12.51pm, 10km south-east of the central city at a
depth of 5km. Strong aftershocks are continuing.

Rain is hampering efforts to free an unknown number of people trapped in
collapsed and burning buildings.

Deputy Prime Minister Bill English says people must leave central
Christchurch because it is not safe. Police are urging people to stay at
home and check on their neighbours, while schools in the greater area
are closed until further notice.

Roads, buildings, homes and core infrastructure have extensive damage.
Civil Defence says cordons have been set up around the one-way system in
the central city and have been extended overnight.

Welfare centres for quake victims have been established at Burnside
School, Papanui High School, the Lyttelton Recreation Centre, Brooklands
Community Centre and Akaroa Senior School. [more]
