Marita Conlon-McKenna: Good Girl

Ireland is divided into two parts. In Northern Ireland you are Protestants, and in South Ireland you are Catholics. The relationship between Protestants and Catholics is very tense and has been a problem in Ireland since 1200th, when Ireland got colonized, and it’s still a big problem. It’s very common that people from South and North Ireland hate each other.

So I think the reason why the police didn’t get involved, is because that Chrissy is a catholic and her boyfriend Ian is a protestant. And if the police did get involved, were the people in the neighbourhood would start to talk about Chrissy dating a “protestant-boy”, and then people will start to look at Chrissy like she was a protestant, and maybe people would look down at her family, and start to call them names and do other silly things, that’s how tense the situation in Ireland is. So you can say it has a lot to do with your image, And because of the dividing of the Catholic and the Protestant religion, people from the each religion stick together, and that’s why Chrissy parents doesn’t want anybody to know about the episode. And maybe Chrissy´s mother is afraid of what their bishop would think of them.
I think it has a lot to do with the Catholic Church, Catholic people are proud of their religion, and they don’t want to be compared with Protestants, and I think it’s because their religion goes such a long way back, and they want to keep their traditions, like the pope, and the beautiful churches.

I think they want to forget the night because they want to pretend it never happened. It’s like they try to forget the episode and just move on with their lives. It’s a taboo that their daughter got tormented because she was dating a “protestant-boy”. And like I wrote they don’t want anybody to know about the episode.

Citat
and they want to keep their values, like the pope, and the beautiful churches.

1: Hvorfor ændre traditions til values.

2: like the pope....o.s.v.

Oversat:

and they want to keep their traditions, such as the pope and the beautiful churches.

and they want to keep their values, such as the pope and the beautiful churches.
